If you don't want cancer treatment no one will force you, same with insulin or any other kind of medication*. Heck even children can refuse in certain situations. So I don't understand this fear of being forced to getting a cure for a disability when every damn other kind of medication/treatment on this planet are up to the individual to decide if they want or not.

*With the exception of psych meds in extreme situations and then only until the individual is back to being able to make their own damn decisions.

I can see where some people might be concerned over the possibility of parents making the choice for young children, especially when discussing situations over which there is disagreement as to whether they constitute a disability or disease or not. Having the legal right to refuse something doesn't always guarantee that right will be respected or enforced.

Overall, though, I still think the potential good outweighs the potential harm.

I literally cannot understand that viewpoint at all. Why would anyone WANT to allow their child to go through life with a significant impairment? Because, yes, being deaf or autistic or any of those things IS an impairment/disability. How could you in good conscience say "No, I don't want my child to be able to hear, even though they might want to be able to if they were given the choice"? How much more fucking selfish can you possibly be?

I know right? If I had a deaf child or a child who can't walk, do you think I'd just LET them stay that way? It's hard enough in the world for even normal people, why would I keep my child in a state that would make things harder for them?

fuck that bullshit. If I could cure paralysis, deafness, and hell, if I could cure my brother's Asperger's, I fucking would. If I could have cured it for him when he was in school, I would have, cause then he may not have been picked on quite so badly. B/

Exactly. The entire reason I'm planning to adopt rather than have biological kids is that I have a couple of genetic conditions that have a very high chance of being passed on to any children I have. There is no way I would willingly inflict them on a child because they make life SUCK. It would just be pure selfishness on my part.
