Hmm... maybe that's part of it too. I used to read a lot of Harry Potter fanfic. Actually... I think it was my first fanfic... and my first fandom too.

But 95% of what I read was book 4/5/6/whatever-was-the-next-one-coming-out continuation fic. Like so much of what comes out and what I read now is shipping fic and AUs. Which is great. You can always read shipping fic and AUs regardless of where you stand in canon. But I think Harry Potter was really unique in that the majority of the "classics" and fic in general was continuation fic. Yes, there was definitely shipping involved, but for the most part you had your canon up to a certain point and people wrote from there. And then in 2-3 years when the next book came out, all the previous fics were no longer canon, and people started writing the next batch of Book Whatever fics.

So going back and reading stuff, it's all very dated.

I think for me, I just got overwhelmed with the amount of fanfic plus I had no favorite character/pairing.

See, I have a favorite pairing. It's just that that pairing happens to be time-traveling!Luna/Tom Riddle crack!ship, preferably as a 60k+ epic.

Needless to say, that fanfic does not exist. :(

... and I think you just helped me, also a HP fandom "graduate" so to speak, understand why I've found other fandoms so frustrating - I miss missing moments, continuation fic, etc. that you used to get from the HP fandom but don't get from others as much. You're also right though that this put a bit of a lid on it once it ended - yes, there was room to work with, nineteen years and all that, but still.

I've re-read some of the books and still love them, though.
