But 95% of what I read was book 4/5/6/whatever-was-the-next-one-coming-out continuation fic. Like so much of what comes out and what I read now is shipping fic and AUs. Which is great. You can always read shipping fic and AUs regardless of where you stand in canon. But I think Harry Potter was really unique in that the majority of the "classics" and fic in general was continuation fic. Yes, there was definitely shipping involved, but for the most part you had your canon up to a certain point and people wrote from there. And then in 2-3 years when the next book came out, all the previous fics were no longer canon, and people started writing the next batch of Book Whatever fics.
So going back and reading stuff, it's all very dated.
