Gang rape, tongue ripped out (ew), cutting off hands?

uh

None of which were depicted or described in any kind of graphic way. The mere mention of things in basic terms does not warrant a warning.

Like, how do you even warn for that anyway? WARNING: MENTION OF GANG RAPE BELOW?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
i guess that is exactly what this trigger-warning fad is coming to :/

I did not say trigger warning holy shit

This is one of those situations where a trigger warning would contain precisely the same things as the secret itself.

ok dude I didn't say trigger warning. anywhere. ever.

sorry but is anyone even reading what I wrote? or did you just see "courtesy warning please" and go "OMG ANOTHER TRIGGER WARNING" like...those two things are so different. REALLY different.

*shrug* I really do not think it's that big of a deal. I did say courtesy warning, not trigger warning. But I would have put something like "gory tmi" in the subject line.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What the heck is the difference between courtesy warning and trigger warning?

a trigger warning is a warning for something that can genuinely trigger someone (well, anything can, but things like discussion of rape or abuse, stuff that's likely to be relatively common)

a courtesy warning is just letting people know that there's squicky stuff that you're about to be talking about/posting. not necessary, but polite to do.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
anon who originally asked why (and then replied to you a single time)

I never thought you were even suggesting a trigger warning- at least for my part, I did grasp the courtesy part and am not any of the anons bringing trigger warning complaints in. (I do have those complaints too, and in the mood I was in yesterday probably would have said a good deal more if I'd even thought that was your insinuation. They're tangentially related concepts, yes, but still incredibly different; at most you implied a breach of manners, not some hysteria-worthy attack on or disregard for someone's emotional stability.)

AS a courtesy, I do get how it could be the considerate thing to do to provide some kind of "hey, touchy subjects about to be discussed below" indicator. As much as I'm not likely to spare my time on it unless I'm getting quite graphic about very commonly upsetting things, which may well mean I'm not very courteous but oh well we all have flaws, I wouldn't complain or be confused about the suggestion that it might be the polite thing to do.

Where I do and did get thrown is that like... the comment you replied to was literally less than a line long and essentially entirely nondescriptive beyond sufficient words to identify the specific acts being referenced? I don't get how or why someone should warn for the scantest mention of things on that level to the extent that to do so can be deemed courteous and not to do so, by implication, discourteous. I really can't wrap my head around it for THAT minimal of a mention.

I did not expect this to be a big blown-up deal, I just thought the comment was really squicky. But it wasn't more than a "ew, yuck, don't need to think about that" and my comment wasn't more than a drive-by comment with my opinion on that. I would have prefaced the comment with "possible gory tmi" or "body mutilation" or something just because it's the first comment in the thread, it didn't collapse, and not everyone has any idea what to expect.

I wan't to be clear though that I don't think this is even in the same league as triggers or trigger warnings and I am sorry (really) for my failure to communicate that initially. It was just an opinion and a thought about internet etiquette but in the long run it was minor on the list of possible offenses (to me, it's my opinion obviously) and I didn't give it much thought after making the comment and scrolling on.

I will say though that part of my thought process is that I know some people are way more squeamish than I am about some things, and even then tongue mutilation has always been a big squick to me. So I couldn't help but wonder if someone else might have been more disturbed by it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
That really helps me understand where you were coming from actually (seems a stronger/faster squeamishness sympathy response than I have, which I can get even if I don't share it), and thank you for replying. I really didn't take you as communicating poorly in the first place, I just... didn't get it. Mostly I felt bad when I went back and skimmed threads today to see it turned into a minor Thing on you that started off from what I feel was MY poor communication. I have been in a particular type of mood in the midst of some emotional things that tends to super blunt my efforts at conveying tone online (and grasping ultimately pretty understandable concepts apparently), and I should have tried harder from the outset. So I'm really sorry for my part and again, appreciate the extra explanation. I think it will actually help me be more understanding of similar, yeah, internet etiquette type content requests in the future. :)

It's no problem, don't worry about it anon! Thanks for your response, I appreciate your explanation and communication as well :)
