I just don't get how it's a question even though I see it followed by a question mark all the time. Its literal meaning is a command and its implied meaning is "I have something to tell you". Where is the question in that?

I feel really dense because it seems like your interpretation is the more common one but I just don't get it.

I think when it's used as a question, it's conceptualized as a shortened version of "can you guess what I'm about to say/tell you?"

This, or maybe, rather than "guess" being a command form, it's simply a fragment of "will you guess what (I'm thinking)?"

Ah, yes, true.

I guess that makes sense. I just can't imagine it sounding like a question in my head without it sounding wrong.

I can understand that. It's the same way with me for certain words and phrases (though don't ask me to tell you what they are, because for some reason I can't think of them right now, ha).

I use it as "I have something to tell you, but try to guess what it is first." The something is usually tangentially related to the subject at hand.

I'm still not seeing a question there.
