Re: Have you ever liked a movie/tv show better then the book it's based on?

Neil Gaiman's Coraline. I liked his comics, but his prose simply doesn't appeal to me. Coraline is the only book of his that I've gotten through from beginning to end, but it dragged in places. The movie's pacing was better. I also liked what the movie did with the Other Mother's domain, the Other Father, and Coraline's little friend.

(I'm considering trying The Ocean at the End of the Lane... Has anyone else already read that?)

I like the book but you brought up a good point about the Other Mother's domain and I think that's why the movie inches out the book for me. Laika did amazing work on the visuals and I came out of that movie really appreciating everything they did for their version of the story.

I loved the style of the art in general in the movie but the Other Mother's area was just wonderful, even against what had come before.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane was fast paced, I read it in one sitting but I felt, I don't know, as though I was missing something at the end? It wasn't my favorite of his books and if it wasn't for the fact that the book came with the signing, I would not have bought the book. But that's just me. I'd much rather reread Good Omens or American Gods or Neverwhere.

Thanks for the low down on the Ocean! (And congrats on your signed book!)

It was during the Ocean at the End of the Lane press tour and then we waited around for hours for him to sign one other item (since the Ocean at the End of the Lane was presigned). When we got up to the front, even though he had been signing books for three hours, he was still super nice and amazing. Neil Gaiman is an amazing person and really nice to his fans.

But the book just didn't do it for me this time. (Meanwhile, my poor sister has all of the Absolute Sandman and Death books and lugged one of those with her to get it signed. I still can't believe she dragged that with her, while I just got Good Omens signed)

I feel the same way about Stardust. Probably would feel same way about Coraline too, but I was so bummed by his writing style by then, that I never got around to it.

I never saw or read Stardust. Was the movie worth seeing?

I'd definitely recommend it. Sure, it has its share of plot holes and the main character could not be anymore a Gary Stu, especially towards the end, but it has this unique air and whimsy to it, that just makes it fun to watch. The acting and look of the film is wonderful and the soundtrack even more so.

Thanks for the (honest) rec! I'll keep an eye out for it then. I like whimsy. ^_~
