This. It's like saying, wow, movies are more enjoyable than the scripts they're written on. It actually gets me somewhat upset now that so many of my teachers had us comb over his plays with a fine tooth comb and NEVER offered up an accompanying performance.

My freshmen English teacher had us fill out a worksheet in which we had to go through every single act and pick out physical descriptions of the characters. If I could travel back in time, I'd just write "whatever actor is currently playing them" under each column.

The best Shakespeare class I ever took was one where we never saw a performance (it was a condensed class; we didn't have the time), but almost all of the lessons were about asking us how we'd stage them and making us think about them as performances rather than something written down. One of the options for the final project -- which only I and one other class member chose, which surprised me -- was to film yourself performing a monologue from one of the plays we'd read and write a paper about why you made the staging/acting/costuming choices you did.

I love Shakespeare to death and your teacher makes me sad :(
