A good 70% of the time at least, Tolkien seemed obviously more interested in showing off his language skills and massive worldbuilding than he was about actually telling a logical story. Most of the characters are apt to go on long ten hour speeches about something not remotely relevant, just so Tolkien could work it all in there.

(and I am a LOTR fan, honest)
