I'm another of the people who almost gave Avatar a miss -- I watched an episode or two when they first aired and everything seemed very predictable and trite. And then the fandom exploded and all my friends were obsessing over it... And I had no motivation to watch it. Trite, kid's show, etc.

Then I did watch it, and it is surprisingly original, and beautifully animated, and very well-developed. I enjoyed myself.

But... I'm not in the fandom. I don't really fangirl it; I just enjoyed it. It's not important to be IN a FANDOM. I just have the ability to talk about it with my friends now. There's a difference between being knowledgeable about a topic, let's say history, and actually being a researcher of history who writes for scholarly journals, you know? I don't have to fangirl the series obsessively to now know what they're talking about and have something decent to watch on Friday nights. :3
