I may have initially avoided Avatar for the same reason, but I got over myself and my "OH JAPAN IS SUPERIOR AND IT'S THE ONLY PLACE ANIME CAN COME FROM BAWWWW" attitude.

Shut the fuck up and stop judging things by their country of origin.

People like you bother the hell out of me.

I think the point is that it kept being called by everyone as this anime on Nick. It's not anime. It doesn't look anything like anime. It's not the country of origin. It's that it isn't the style that defines anime. It's just a regular cartoon that happens to take place in a decidedly anime-ish location.

The fact that we have to DIFFERENTIATE cartoons from Japan and call them anime is what REALLY bothers me.

'Cause guess what?

"Anime" is just the Japanese word for "cartoon." That's what they call EVERYTHING THAT IS ANIMATED there. Everything. In Japan, Mickey Mouse is referred to as "anime."

And I'm as much as a weeaboo as the next animu-fan, and I STILL don't get everyone's "IT'S NOT JUST THE STYLE OR WHERE IT CAME FROM." I've seen plenty of American cartoons and plenty of anime, and honestly? Besides the fact that Japan has less of a "oh cartoons are for kids" mindset and therefore has adult themes show up more often, I see no REAL difference. Crayon Shin-chan is very comparable to any adult gag-cartoon that you see late-night in America. A lot of shounen series are actually pretty comparable to things like the older superhero stories, including excess exposition.
