Yeah getting out of there is probably a good idea.

It's interesting to see this in the same bunch with a Titanic secret. I haven't seen it but a friend of mine keeps trying to convince me to. She mentioned once that Rose considers committing suicide and all I could think when she said that is "and this is supposed to be some epic romance? how is she supposed to be in the right mindset for a healthy relationship?" Kinda soured the big romance for me. I might end up liking it if I actually watched it but the sound of it is kind of icky to me.

Well, she probably wouldn't have seriously gone through with it, it was a very spur-of-the-moment wild "maybe I'll just jump overboard" thing. And she only "tried" because she was being guilt-tripped by her mother to marry a rich guy she hated because if she didn't, her mother would no longer be rich enough to maintain her aristocratic lifestyle, Rose wasn't depressed or mentally messed up or anything.

Also, it wasn't really a relationship, it was a two-day fling. A very "epic" fling, that may have gone somewhere if the boat hadn't sank, but a fling nonetheless.

Like I said, I'd probably be okay with it if I watched it but the way my friend said it made me react in a way that I don't think was what she wanted.

She tried to because of her station and her expectations that weren't going with what she wanted. And considering her fiance was a jackass, she felt she had no choice. And being on a boat like that for however many weeks/days, she felt trapped. She even says that in movie.

the romance doesn't really happen until after and it's with the guy who talked her out of it.

As far as romances go, it's not that bad, even if a bit meh. But the suicide part did have meaning to it.

Yeah it doesn't sound that bad. It was more about the way my friend said it and the general idea of it and even if it was worse it's not like I'm trying to lecture anyone about what an unhealthy relationship it was and hdu like it!

Personally I don't think I could date someone who talked me down from suicide though.

He didn't talk her down from suicide, he gave her reasons to live. Like, literally showed her what other people did to enjoy life even though they lived in not so good conditions.

Which is why, in the end, she fights to survive, but chooses to live life according to her own purposes, and not like the lady she was supposed to become.

I thought that was very inspiring, back when I saw it.

Actually, the Titanic sank after only four days at sea (left April 10, was hit by the iceberg at night on April 14, sank early morning on April 15th) ;)

But your comment about her feeling trapped and all is still very true. Women were, effectively, trapped without physical constraints back then because they didn't have the financial independence that men did and doing flashy shit could ruin their reputations, which was the only asset they had to secure financial safety in the form of a husband.

I don't know, but I'm wondering now if this is related to a rant I saw on fanficrants a few months ago, complaining about somebody that demanded a trigger warning because food in general 'triggered' them, and the OP wasn't even writing about eating disorders, just a scene where somebody just happened to be eating.

I have no idea, but I've definitely seen some really absurd trigger warnings in the last while. I have absolutely no goddamn idea how these people even function IRL because the world out there by and large doesn't post up these kinds of things.

... I'm pretty sure a lot of the people who ask for or need trigger warnings for things like food and eating don't function all that well IRL. As in having serious problems with disordered eating. Most of the trigger warnings I see are for things like rape and murder and gore with a sprinkling of common phobias (not actually triggers for most people but 'trigger' has kind of replaced plain ol' 'warning' online) and then there are things that affect parts of the population that have a higher than average presence online and in fandom spaces because they face more discrimination IRL. People with disabilities, people with mental disorders, people figuring out/who have less common sexualities/gender presentations, people who have to deal with racist shitbags all the time might be triggered in the real "negatively impacts real life functioning/causes nasty breakdowns/flashbacks of past abuse" sense rather than the fandom "unpleasant shit I'm sick of dealing with IRL" sense.

People can latch on to very specific things in traumatic events, and something seemingly unimportant details can be a very strong reminder. Or on the other side, people can be traumatised by something very mundane and safe to everyone else. It isn't common, and I agree that demanding trigger warnings simply isn't feasible, but it is a serious problem for those people.
I remember that in the period after I was involved in a bus crash I couldn't look at or hear about buses anymore without completely losing my shit and feeling like I was going to die for no real reason. It was pretty shitty for me, but I never expected or asked people to stop mentioning buses, because they're buses for fuck's sake. I appreciated it when they tried to avoid the subject, but I never stopped people from talking about the most discussed and mundane thing in the world. (It's not much of an overstatement to say most people here can not go five minutes without complaining about public transport, I am one of them myself).
If you're triggered by something mundane, that's just tough luck, really, and that's a good thing, when you think about it. Because a person who can't function whenever rape is mentioned for example is a very different story from someone who can't leave the house for fear of seeing a bus, that's something you really need to get over more than other problems, just to keep on living.
