i realize this is about a month and a half late, but i just discovered this comic

for those of you who don't know, john campbell was the cartoonist behind pictures for sad children

a while back she had a nervous breakdown and burned a bunch of the books that people had bought on kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/73258510/sad-pictures-for-children/posts/759318

i don't know how to feel about this and i feel like the comic is making light of her situation in a very cruel way

Jesus Christ what a terrible comic. I'm not saying that what John Campbell did was good - it was clearly a shitty thing, a shitty situation, and probably the result of serious mental illness. But making a comic to mock him is in no way a valid response. Fuck that shit.

how is doing a mountain of DMT and idiotically not accounting for shipping costs in your fundraiser (not even counting the fact that he made like $50k+ when he only asked 8k -- and as someone who has printed and shipped books before, trust me, it may be expensive but not $50k+ expensive) deserving of sympathy?

i'm not denying that his actions were super shitty or defending them, but i do think that they're deserving of some degree of sympathy, or at the very least, not deserving of someone going out there for the purpose of what seems to me some pretty shitty mockery and hatred

i don't believe you, but what does it matter? you ostensibly have the patience of a saint and are giving JC the benefit of the doubt, and good on you for it, but i think people have the right to be unsympathetic with him and the claims of "mental illness" don't ring true to me (not that it excuses him burning the books anyway -- if you think he deserves sympathy for that you're naive)

and even if it IS mental illness, it's probably because of the DMT abuse, not the other way around

I think John Campbell is an asshole. Also, I don't remember anywhere that John Campbell identifies as female?

Apparently JC identified as female in a Kickstarter update that was locked for backers only, and also alluded to it in the massive "I am burning everything" post. However, there are also apparently reasons to doubt whether or not JC was being sincere about it, I don't know, it's all very ambiguous and post-modern

I don't care how unstable, drugged out, or political you are. Destroying merchandise that people bought to support you is shitty. Even Tessa Stone wasn't that shitty. I feel no sympathy for this fucker at all.

I also remember this happened during a week when Tom Siddell was being attacked for his twitter comments, and the latest Questionable Content made it seem like Jeph was going to lose it again. Comic creators, man.

Even attempting to read that post was uncomfortable and sad. Wow.

I'm amazed that all of that comes from some stupid four panel MS Paint comics. Jesus Christ.

first off, a lot of people are assuming his "I'm not really a man" was a reference to transsexualism but I've never seen more then that and he was all depressed so he might have meant it a different way? if he said something more on tumblr or something elaborating on that I'll take that back, but I'ma call him he until confirmed.

But that said... he took money. He not only failed to refund money but lectured people who fucking wanted what was promised and then burned what was promised.

Fuck him, he deserves all the misery his self-destructive decisions will give him.

Yeah, and I'm honestly not sure I entirely believe the whole 'he had a mental breakdown' thing. The whole thing is incredibly dubious, and burning the books really goes beyond the pale of just failing to deliver.

Now this: http://kickfailure.com/2013/04/17/the-sad-story-of-katalyka/ THAT seemed like a legitimate mental breakdown. The trouble there is that it seems like people shouldn't have funded her in the first place, because there were warning signs of her being likely to flake out.
