Book Club

Fingersmith By Sarah Waters takes the win.

The plan is as follows:
Anyone who want's to take part should try and get the book asap but the end date is Saturday 31st May, There'll be an official type discussion then, and we'll also start picking another book.

but feel free to throw up any discussions you fancy between now and then (I know I will be - I like talking about stuff as I'm reading / watching, instead of saving my thoughts up and letting them all out at the end, especially when the end is a full month away). Just keep you're progress labelled so you don't spoil people until the end date.

EG, if you're up to the second chapter and you want to talk about it at some point before Saturday the 31st, just put up a post called something like "Book club, Fingersmith, chapter two" common sense and courtesy, really.

God's willing this will all start running smooth and be as fun as I'm hoping for.

Is discussion about TV or movie adaptations welcome, either as a separate thing or in a here's-what-they-changed-did-it-work-for-you kind of way?

Welcome as far as I'm concerned. We'll see if it get's anyone's hackles up, but I expect you won't be alone in wanting to talk about the series.

Shouldn't we start picking the next book in the first week of May?

Re: Book Club

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose we can do. Makes some sense. I'm worried about making it too confusing, but I suppose if I'm carful how I word it, it should be fine.

You know you're quite right. Now that I think about it, if we wait until the end of may to pick a book for june, we won't actually have any time. Very well spotted there, mate, that would have been a disaster.

I kinda think we talked about having a timeline before. We got things started late this month, but ordinarily it would go something like:

May: week 1, pick June book; weeks 1-whenever, read May book and acquire June book; last week, discuss May book

then at the beginning of June, we can start reading the June book since we'll have had plenty of time to get it, and also start planning for July.

and so forth.

That does indeed ring a bell, must have totally skipped my mind. thanks for remembering that, cause I was about to walk us right into another fuck up. good call 8)

Wait, so we start reading at the end of May instead of the beginning? And I'm confused about picking the next book. Will we be reading the second one in July?

Re: Book Club

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry. I was thinking we all should have finished the first book by the end of May. Fingersmith will be May's book, so we all try and aquire a copy by the start of may, and we have a full month to get through it, so that when May 31st rolls around we should all be able to discuss it without worrying about spoilers. Make sense?

Ok, rough time table (amended based on diet_poison's suggestion, cause otherwise it won't fit.)

May 1st:
Start reading Mays book.
Start recommendation thread for Junes choice

May 4th:
Start poll for Junes choice

May 8th:
Close poll for Junes choice and Announce

May 31st:
Official Discussion for Mays book

June 1st:
Start reading Junes book.
Start recommendation thread for Julys choice

June 4th:
Start poll for Julys choice

June 8th:
Close poll for Julys choice and Announce

June 30th:
Official Discussion for Junes book

How's that grab you?

I have a stupid question: is this book written in 1st person? Google is failing me.

Re: Book Club

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-04-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's a stupid question, but I don't have an answer for you yet.

Would it bother you if it is 1st person?

Re: Book Club

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
There's an answer below. Yeah, 1st person is one of those things that annoy me and I generally avoid, but I'll still give the book a try. Maybe it'll be the exception that proves the rule.

Hm. I don't really get it in relation to books, but I used to loath first person games. What's the point in them building a protagonist if you don't see anything but his hands? that's stupid ands shallow and stupid. Then I played fallout 3, then deus ex, then dishonoured, and so on and sow forth. now it's just another style to me. I even played modern warfare, and halo recently.

Re: Book Club

Can I ask why this is a problem? I don't mean to embarrass you, I'm just not sure why people have this issue. It's never been a barrier to me enjoying a book and I don't really get it.

All good. :) Guess i need to see what my library has to offer. It takes them about a week to ten days to get an inter-library book.

Yahoo! I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately, so I'm pumped to be reading again and having people to discuss it with :) Thank you for organizing all this!

You're entirely welcome, I'm actually in the same situation, slump-wise. I kinda wish I'd been able to rope someone with a more organise-y mind into doing the work, but I'm very much looking forward to getting this underway.
