The only reason I can see this actually happening is if someone somewhere in your network of psychological care staff flagged you as a potential health risk/hazard to those around you, or they characterized your autism as something that required you to have the help of a professional aide in order for you to complete every day tasks.

It's not really "Orwellian" to assign an aide to a disabled student if that student has demonstrated that they can be a physical danger to themselves or others. It's also pretty common practice for aides to attend students who might not be able to always function in social situations.

How your parent handled the reports, however, was both not normal and absolutely uncalled for. That is something you should have brought up to your care staff at the time, because it's something that would almost constitute emotional abuse, depending on the severity of what they did and said.

I hated having the aide around because they marked me as weird and unusual, but they could be helpful when I needed things emotionally that other kids didn't need. Such as a break from class if I was getting upset. Of course, they would tell my parents that I took a break, and my parents would get mad, so I would always beg the aide not to put things in the report if I knew my parents would get pissy about them but they would always say "but I also wrote that you handled it really well/recovered quickly/apologized/etc!" In hindsight I think it was obvious that I was terrified of something going on at home, but...I was an emotional kid and they probably thought I was just "overreacting" as usual.

I'm sorry to hear about how your parents treated your disability, anon. It's not something that should have happened when you were only using the services that are meant to allow you to manage yourself better in the way they were designed to be used. The reports are standard, and they are intended to inform parents about their children's health in the same way that the waivers you sign at doctor's offices are meant to inform you about the procedure you are about to have. Because you were under the age of 18, the aide unfortunately did have a legal obligation to send those reports.

I hope you can take a bit of comfort in knowing that you weren't doing anything wrong, and their reactions were something that never should have happened. As for the aides, I can only say that aides aren't always trained as psychologists, and are often trained as nurses; it may not have been as obvious to your aide as it should have been that you were having a situation at home.

If you ever have problems like this in the future, tell your support worker (if you have one). People shouldn't be treating you like this, regardless of whether or not they are family members.
