as special as Moffat makes her out to be

So, Clara is Moffat's Cut-and-Paste Standard Female Companion Character #9000 then? Good to know.

Took a bit longer than I thought for the Moffat bashing to start actually.

It always surprises me when people act like there's a standard for Moffat's companions.

There's only been one female companion. Amy. River wasn't really a companion--and River is nothing like Amy anyway.

But I don't think Amy and Clara are that similar--I just think Clara really only has one personality trait, and it's a personality trait Amy had: feisty. Even then, Clara's is more about being adorable, Amy's was more about being fiery. But I don't think Jenny or Vastra are anything like any of these characters.

I just don't understand. There's a lot I don't like about Moffat's run, but there's like this overwhelming urge in fandom to make EVERY SINGLE THING about his run bad and awful and a symptom of the same mess.

AYRT

It's not that there is a standard FOR female companions, it is that Moffat's female companions ARE standard: I.e., female characters that are about .05mm deep (and, as you noted, are "feisty"), who exist mainly to move the plot (what there is of it) ahead/forward/backwards/whatever through the use of snappy one-liners/1-or-2-at-most-sentence dialogue. That can be interchanged from character to character, with no appreciable difference.

Jenny and Vastra are background characters at best, and one is an alien, sooo not the Cut-and-Paste Standard Female Companion;" this doesn't invalidate the fact that there is a very clear character template Moffat is going by, for the primary female companion of the moment. Fandom reinforces his poor choices in this respect, and the vicious circle begins anew.

That said. I personally don't like the plot/lack thereof, the cardboard characters really don't bother me as much as the scatterbrained nature of the episodes themselves, which is why I haven't watched in long time.

AYRT. I guess I'll address this carefully.

.05mm deep: I don't know if I agree with that.

Feisty: Well...I mean...I would actually assign that trait to both Rose and Donna. It's just kind of a quality New Who companions have. Only Martha and Rory, in my mind, lack this trait overtly.

Move the plot: I'm not sure about this. Moffat writes his stories to center around an important character/companion. He's also really fond of huge series-spanning story arcs. RTD liked that too, but you only got name drops every so often in episodes until the finale aired, and then the finale probably focused on them, i.e. Bad Wolf and the Doctor-Donna.

But it's true, Clara exists to be the Impossible Girl. Literally and figuratively. I'm hoping she can do something else in S8, but I do strongly disagree that Amy or River or Rory only moved the plot forward. The plot was meant to also push their characters.

And I'm surprised that you think Moffat has no plot. He doesn't have very coherent plots, but they're definitely plot-heavy.

Dialogue: I disagree. Moffat definitely LOVES 'clever' dialogue, I think River, Amy, and other major female characters of Moffat's era don't sound identical or interchangeable...but I do think Clara sounds a lot like Amy.

Jenny and Vastra: They have the same prominence and plot relevance that Jack Harkness did. You're right, they're not thoroughly developed and characters meant to stand on their own, but they have personalities, wants, desires, and are distinct from everyone else.

I do think that Clara is basically Amy 2.0 without any of the character flaws. Like...I can't think of a single character flaw Clara has. At most, Clara is more well-behaved than Amy.

Fiesty started long before Nu-Who. Apart from Mel (who we all try to forget) every female companion since Tegan have had fiesty as their primary character trait (Mel had "cardboard" as hers). And a lot of the other companions had the "fiesty" card too. Anyone remember Leela? A fiesty savage in a chamois leather leotard. She was actually kinda cool.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Late, but:

Yeah, I think I said that somewhere in there or in another reply. Most companions have that character trait, just as most of them are brave, kind, heroic, intelligent, etc. In terms of companions, these traits aren't enough to distinguish a real personality.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
But there's also been Madame Pompadour and Sally Sparrow who, while not typical companions, exhibited much of the same feistiness. As did (depending on your definition of feistiness) River. As did Rose during Empty Child/Doctor Dances. As did other Moffat characters from other series such as Lynda Day (Press Gang) and some of his women in Sherlock. I'd just like to see a companion who doesn't have that characteristic. There are other personality traits that would work well in a companion.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I had a reply above that basically did say that, yeah, most companions have that character quality. IMO, only Martha and Rory don't. But I think the difference is that it's really the ONLY quality I actually see in Clara that isn't simply a trait all companions must have (like self-sacrifice, bravery, intelligence, etc).

+1 to your last paragraph, and to Clara not having much of a personality beyond 'feisty.' Amy had a layer of that pasted on top too, but at least underneath were all sorts of issues with abandonment, commitment, trust, memory/perception, etc. Clara just... there's nothing about her that sticks from one episode to the next. I want to like her, but there's precious little to work with.

Well no to be fair the other female characters he's written actually have a discernible personality.
