Re: Romantic Subplots
(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 02:32 am (UTC)(link)That just sounds like such a waste. I looked the series up and it seems as though it had a great deal of potential. This sort of writing turns up all the time in YA, SF, fantasy, dystopia (of course - that, and it's nearly impossible to find good paranormal stories that aren't PNR anymore.) A hero who prioritizes romance over more important things, like the survival of entire worlds, is a terrible hero - and if the narrative doesn't acknowledge that, it's probably not a good one overall.
On a more personal note, I can't stand the use of 'yummy' as shorthand for 'attractive'. I mean... really, do you want to date them or *eat* them? (The only time it's forgivable is if the answer is legitimately 'both', because there *probably* aren't enough mantis romances in fiction.)
At any other time it's objectification, which reminds me of my similar dislike for characters talking about their partners as if they were possessions (and that generally doesn't get a corresponding exception - wanting to make someone 'theirs' is closer to slavery than love, technically speaking.)
