No disrespect to any atheist, because atheism is not even the tiniest fraction of what makes this comment so horrifying, but...wow. Seriously? This...this is the way you think? You live like this? Day to day? And I've been talking to you this whole time, wondering why you always seemed just a little bit creepy but liking you so much anyway and thinking how strong you must be to have the job you say you have?

I don't understand why you're so horrified. They feel that it is impossible to reconcile bad things happening with an omniscient omnipotent benevolent being, and are bitter about attempts to do so.

I'm honestly not sure how to respond to this. Your reaction makes me feel kind of guilty and very sad. Especially considering the possibility that you are one of the regulars I like. Especially if you are intrigueing or someone along these lines.

I'm sorry that I'm not who you thought I was? I've always had the impression that most of my comments re:general world outlook were beyond depressing, so I didn't think this would be a revelation to anyone.

(and have I ever indicated what my job was? I thought I haven't. There were a couple of hints, yes, but I've changed my occupation a couple of times and I've talked about different fields of study here on f!s).

Her outlook is pessimistic, but it's not all that unique or unreasonable, and it's certainly not creepy. It's really kind of distressing that you seem to imply that you can no longer like her, or ever talk to her again. She comes across as being very sad, perhaps even depressed, and this is your reaction.

(I also think the word "creepy" is kind of weirdly applied here since I think creepy is like sexist, rapey, sadistic, etc that kind of thing, not "pessimistic"

What exactly is horrifying about that? The hard look at reality? No one is telling you you can't still believe in an all loving god (well, maybe the bible stories in which he's a blood thirsty racist pedophilic monster, but anyway. And yeah, he tells Moses in numbers to murder little boys and split the female children up amongst his men. Not going to argue with that) Some people just don't think a loving god would allow children to develop cancer or get raped, stuff like that, you know. It's honestly not that horrifying to think that the negative things in the world would make someone bitter.

I don't think I have said that, either. The only case in which you can know anything about what I do is if you are one of the two fannish people who know my twitter username.

Look, I'm really anxious to keep my personal info personal. I don't want to confirm or deny anything. But I imagine this anon could take some things I have mentioned to mean that my occupation is, eh, unusual in the same sense Stella's is. I'm not even saying it's perfectly untrue, but I'm also pretty sure that their version is vastly different from the reality and that I don't deserve the attitude they confessed to having had towards me.

Ah, good. I value your opinion and it's a relief to hear that this wasn't a dealbreaker.

I'm not upset by the sentiment (it's not unusual) so much as I'm troubled by the fact that it might be a named user I like. And now they won't speak to me. Or something.

the more I think about this the more I think it's a huge misfire intended for Stella. (Still a really weird comment with kind of an upsetting attitude imo)

Personally, I find it far more horrifying when religious people try to justify a premature death by saying that God must've had a plan for that person.

Just... how fucking insensitive do you have to be to say that to someone? "Gee, sorry your daughter got run over by a truck, but it's okay because she's with God now! He must've had his reasons!"
