If I knew more about character design, I could probably explain what bugs me about those characters. But I don't, so I'll just say they look like crap.

They're all super sameface, for one thing. And the hair says "trying too hard" to me. It's like baby's first Deviantart OCs.

There's something about being a inexperienced artist that seems to give way to a certain sense of aesthetics that is easily recognizable to people who have looked at a lot of amateur art or been there themselves. When you say them they don't sound completely terrible in and of themselves, but it's also inexperience of execution that pushes them over the top into Sonic Deviantart OC fucking horribleness.

What I'm trying to say here is that some of those amateur aesthetics are on display here, and that may be what you are tapping into.

I wouldn't say it's specifically amateur. Kaori Yuki characters look kind of like this, too, just with less bulging lips and less dead eyes.

"Amateur aesthetics" is what I'm calling this specific set of aesthetics that is often shared by people who just started drawing and designing characters, it's not exclusive to them. You can easily have a pro artist drawing with the design sensibilities of a thirteen year old.
