The idea that God is supposed to have a purpose is odd to me. In my mind, he just is.

What do you think the point of God is in either of the scenarios you proposed as the only possibilities?

This. I've always disliked the popular idea that God cannot exist as unconditionally loving, or can't exist at all, because He allows bad things to happen to good people. It assumes that He thinks in the same way we do, which is hilariously arrogant to me.

And these sort of arguments just remind me of why I jokingly refer to myself as an apatheist. I don't know whether or not any gods exist, but even if they did I wouldn't really give a shit, because their existence seems to have fuck-all of an impact on the world or my life. Just existing sure isn't any reason for me to care enough to worship them.
