AFAIK, in an interview, Yu-gi-oh's creator said he deliberately made Motou Yugi's hair resemble the shape of a human hand - all of the upward spikes are supposed to resemble fingers. He did this because he wanted his main character to be extremely memorable. One of the first shapes we all memorize as infants is that of our own hands.
