you're gonna totally flip out when you hear about 'new adult'

NAYRT

Haha, "new adult". Personally, I hate this ridiculous "genre" much more than the YA dystopian steampunk vampire trend. At least most of those books aren't trying to be highbrow and profound.

I hope I never see the day when there is Actual Adult (theme of building career and family), Mid Adult (midlife crisis) and Late Adult (retirement, grandkids, death).

Also this line from the Wiki article about New Adult is just what: ...is a convenient label because it allows parents and bookstores and interested readers to know what is inside

Parents?

I hope I do because that sounds hilarious actually.

Parents of teenagers, I'm assuming? So they don't get confused and accidentally buy erotica for their 10 year old.

Oh right, for some reason I envisioned a parent of a 20 year-old (New Adult) checking if the book they were buying for their delicate child was appropriate.

I work at a public library. I want to be a librarian someday. I should google this. But I am scared, because the last fucking thing our local library system needs is yet another age related division of books and media (jesus christ every fucking different age group has its own damn label stickers ugh.) Also everyones' comments make this sound like pretentious 'literary fiction' aimed at twentysomethings. (How scared should I be?)

I guess I'm the only one in this thread who doesn't get why the idea of this genre is so ridiculous. It's just categorizing by age of protagonist and themes related to that age.

I'm actually neutral to it/find it kind of fascinating. Most of what I write could probably be in that category (idk if I'd call it a genre). It's kind of interesting--I wrote a paper about this--YA used to be considered "just for kids" but Harry Potter, then Twilight and The Hunger Games kind of made it a big deal that they could appeal to adults too, and now you have adult literature kind of trying to imitate the conventions of young adult lit, but at the same time it's kind of a natural evolution. It's like all the fun and adventure of YA, but you don't have to feel guilty about finding the characters hot.

But I also think it's kind of funny (NEW ADULT! It's like New Coke!) and I wanted to see OP's reaction. (Nothing against you seventh_seal, I've enjoyed our conversations in both of these threads.)

That makes sense to me. It does sound silly as a genre name, and I'm not sure it has enough to stand as its own genre, but part of me is pleased by the idea because I generally write for an audience of 18-25 and sometimes I feel like my characters and subject matter don't really have a home.

Same here. It actually makes a lot of sense to me, especially for fans of YA who would like to read similar fiction with more mature themes.
