I'm genuinely baffled by the vehemence in this thread. I suppose it depends on the game, and the depth to which the LPer covered, but for the most part, I don't understand how gameplay is essential to writing fanfic. Fanfic generally doesn't talk about button-pushing or lifebars (or it shouldn't, at least). They're about story, and characters, which, you know, is something you can easily get out of an LP.

The OP is not trying to write a walkthrough, or even claiming to be a gamer. They want to write based on a universe they enjoyed. Some people like games for the storylines. I know I do.

Hey now, I've read some hilarious porn based on game mechanics.

Also I don't think anyone is saying they need to play the game to be able to write fanfic, just that they're not getting the same experience.

I think it's weird that so many people are arguing about whether it's the same experience or not. Of course it's not. But OP never said they felt it was the same experience. They just said they chose to watch the LP and then wanted to write fic. Nothing about that is an argument that they've had the same experience as actually playing the game.

It's because nobody's actually replying to OP's secret, they're just using the opportunity to continue the long-running argument about playing a game vs watching a LP.

As part of that argument, there totally are people who claim that playing a game adds nothing to it that you wouldn't get from watching a LP.
