You're not a bad Christian for wondering why God allows bad things to happen. It's called "the problem of evil," and every theistic religion has their own opinions on it, since it's actually one of the most basic questions for religious philosophy. Entire courses are taught on the subject, theses are written on the subject, and nobody has a catch all answer. Find the one that works for you.
