Don't worry, I get what you're saying!

I'd *love* to get some specific non-superhero comic recs, actually! I've been putting off looking for some because procrastination and don 't know the first thing about comics but if you have some you think are worth checking from Vertigo or otherwise, I'd be happy to hear them. I'm not too picky beyond my superhero dislike.

I know I'm not the anon above, but for what it's worth, I've got a couple recs.

There's 'Love and Rockets' (from Fantagraphics) if you want something that's as far away from superheroes as possible. The very basic summary of it that I can give is that it's p. much an ensemble series centered around a Latino community and the people within it, and it's one of those series where you gotta be prepared to be in it for the long haul, esp. if you pick up the collections: the series dates back to the late 80's. (The early/original stuff is kinda sci-fi based, but it quickly switches to real world/life-grounded stuff) It's got some of the best written female characters, and some stories are pretty powerful. It's not for everyone, but what I've read, I really enjoy.

And if you're into more occult-ish, paranormal stuff, there's always the 'Hellboy' and 'BPRD' series from Dark Horse. They're largely separate from one another (despite BPRD being a satellite spin-off of Hellboy), and the 'Hellboy' stories in of themselves are told in mini-series, so you can easily pick up TPBs. BPRD... I haven't read in a long time, but that's a monthly/ongoing series. There's a fair amount different from the live-action movies, though, so if you've seen those first, don't expect them to be exactly the same.

Lastly, 'Saga' -another monthly/ongoing title from 'Image'- is one that a lot of people seem to enjoy. IMHO, it's better read in the trade format, but if you're into science-fiction stories and/or Brian K. Vaughan, it's worth checking out, at least.
