If you're having fun I don't see the problem.

ikr? it's all everyone talks about, so i feel like i have to watch it to be able to bond with people at uni. good thing it's a pretty good show, because otherwise i wouldn't bother. it's definitely overhyped though.

If you're getting something out of it who cares what your reason for watching is? I think watching so you can have something fun to chat with your coworkers about is a perfectly valid reason. I know I've watched/played/read certain things largely so I could discuss them with friends, and it was worth it.

Perfectly valid reason, though.

You're still enjoying it in some way so I don't see the problem? In spite of the flaws you're seeing you're still able to watch it and have fun talking about it.

I mean in one of my old jobs I would definitely not watch Strictly/X Factor or anything just to join in on the dominant conversation on Monday mornings! So I just didn't watch and stayed out of those conversations.

Honestly, with this particular series, not caring about any of the characters is probably one of the safest ways to enjoy it. It should cut down on your heartbreak and/or outrage, at least.

I am considering doing this to get through family gatherings. This and docter who are pretty much all everyone talks about. While docter who seems the more fun option it's probably too long to watch for something I'm not that interested in. Does anyone know if you have docter who primer lists like they have for getting into comics?

A lot of my friends are really into Doctor Who, but I've tried watching it, and it's a little too out-there for me.

Game of Thrones is a lot more violent, but I enjoy it more. The supernatural stuff is done deliberately and it's never silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering how often people die on the show, you may be on to something. XD

I'm so glad I don't feel this compulsion to be part of a discussion. I have other things I enjoy that overlap with other peoples' interests. I don't need to subject myself to the 3rd worst show on TV.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to hear what the first and second worst are.

Lol this. I love geeking out about fantasy, but despise Game of Thrones. I might be missing out on some great discussions but frankly, that doesn't outweigh my repulsion to the show.

3rd worst though? I don't watch enough TV to rank. It's probably among the top popular shows that I actively hate though.

I keep up with Mad Men for similar reasons.

Hey, you're getting something out of it, so who cares if you're deeply invested?

I don't know, when I watch over my BF's shoulder I just get grumpy about how it goes from kind of cool to needlessly bad. I don't think watching the whole episode would endear me to anyone I know who likes it. I can understand watching something to bond with other people, but not something I dislike!

There are some shows where I'm very invested in the characters, and others where I just like to follow the story and talk about it with other people afterwards. I'm really not emotionally invested in the people in GoT, which makes me feel a bit weird because I still like watching it a lot. But if we enjoy it, why not?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically the only reason why I watched House of Cards.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A friend described Joffrey as 'the Draco Malfoy kid with the crown that is the living embodiment of period cramps'.

She deserves a medal for that because I literally could not stop giggling everytime I thought about it for about a week.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
...I just submitted a secret similar to this. Whoops.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I never watched Breaking Bad but I loved reading meta discussions on good and evil and stuff like that. And it's fun reading/ewatching something and talking about it with other people. I don't think there's anything sad about this secret.
rbhudson: (Default)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2014-04-21 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's not sad at all, that's a perfectly good reason

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I don't think it's sad, OP. People do this all the time, it's just social bonding, like you said. Sometimes it's about sports or the weather, but popular TV shows is just as common and GoT is more interesting than Lost or Friends.
caparazon: (Lupin III / XDDD)

[personal profile] caparazon 2014-04-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, there are worst reasons. I watch it for the memes and the funny posts.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I just tried watching it again yesterday and ugh, I couldn't watch it just to join in on the fun, OP. It's just too overall unpleasant. I feel like I shouldn't just take a shower after watching it. I feel like I should be watching in a bathtub or something.
