Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)Jezebel is like cute animal vids and politics-lite. It's really not the angry man-hating, bra-burning hangout on the internet you seem to think it is, although sometimes a stupid blog post will be promoted, or a stupid article will be posted.
Jezebel is really bad at things like race-issues, acknowledging their own mistakes, misreporting information, and having pointless 'click bait' articles. Like they'll pay big money to people for non-photo-shopped pictures of celebrities under the guise of 'feminism'. But "angry feminism"? Not even close. It's a very tame website.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
Also, they're horrendously bad at acknowledging that not all women are middle-class or upper-class. And while they talk about lesbians sometimes, they don't really seem like they expect to have many lesbian readers.
Let's just say they're a site for straight, cis, upper-middle-class white women who want to have a separate site from straight, cis, upper-middle-class white men, and who have a tendency to think this makes them way more open-minded and knowledgeable about different lifestyles than they really are.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)I actually think that Jezebel does talk about important issues sometimes, and it is important to have a popular mainstream site on somewhere like Gawker that allows people to talk about queer issues, trans issues, and women's issues. I've seen great articles promoted there that have talked about things like trans issues in a very insightful and well-written manner. Something like Jezebel is actually a rarity, which is why I do feel like it shouldn't be completely dismissed, despite all it's problems.
But yes, Jezebel's brand of feminism often seems to only apply to straight, white, attractive, middle-upper class women. Which is why I also don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread, or even an example of what feminism should be. But criticize it for that, not it's "angry man-hating feminism".

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)I've personally never seen an article like that, though? Do you have a link to it? That actually sounds like the thing that would get frowned upon over there. But it could have happened too.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)Just have to add, I don't actually think Jezebel is amazing, and I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of the place. But it makes me tired when feminist spaces on the internet are just dismissed for being angry and man-hating, with hardly any evidence to back it up. It just feeds into the never-ending and negative stereotype that if it's a feminist space, then of course they must be angry and think beating up men is great!!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)And some other greatest hits.
Boss gently suggests obese employee exercise, offers to connect her with a stylist. Employee loses weight, writes book, is extremely grateful to boss. Jezebel: THIS IS EVUL!!!!! http://i.imgur.com/h0gE6pf.jpg
SMARTPHONES TOO BIG! SEXISM!!!!!!!! MEN ARE EVULLLLLLL! http://i.imgur.com/DtPBmOe.jpg
AA doesn't help women at all! LOOK AT THIS STUDY! First Comment: Author of the study telling them they are blatantly lying http://archive.today/ptJae
Creepshots of men are okay because...patriarchy something something http://archive.today/bWHGs
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)That article is messed up. :(
But I guess my point is, that for every article they post that is completely wrong like that, they post a thousand that aren't. Because yes, Jezebel fucks up. But it's not like Jezebel is the angry feminist place on the internet to go to. I would never, never bother visiting it occasionally if it was, and kept seeing articles and comments like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)Jezebel is hardly the worst place on the internet. Calm down.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)Fine, I agree with you.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, that is incredibly shitty, and also part of the whole Gawker media bs. :(
But again, my point is, although sometimes Jezebel has articles that are terrible like that one was, it still doesn't erase the fact that they do have articles and posts that are respectful and insightful, and that it creates a mainstream space where women can safely talk about feminist issues (the comments are screened). Is Jezebel perfect and free from problems? Good god, no. But is it an evil, hateful place on the internet? No, it's not.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
Jezebel is the sum total of its contributors, and all of its best contributors with the exception of Lindy West are gone. And Tracie Egan Morrissey is STILL THERE. I am completely unsurprised to see that she's the one who wrote that article.
Re: I googled to see what on Earth this is
(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)That article is fucked up and horrid. No one should be reading it.
But *every single* post on Return of Kings is fucked up and horrid. So why are you focusing on one post that Jezebel did rather than the multiple awful posts ROK do every day?
