Maybe it's an age thing? I have no idea how old you are, but for my age group we had to write all of our essays etc in cursive starting in 4th grade. It wasn't until high school that computers were an option, and even then it was still acceptable to hand in your assignments hand written if it was in neat cursive.

We did write in cursive, but by the time I got to high school cursive wasn't common and most teachers preferred print anyway. Don't know if we were all terrible at it or if it was a personal preference or what.

We did the computer thing, too. Which has always been preferable to me over handwriting, though I don't hate it.
