I just put my original stuff up on AO3 as well. Well, the short stuff anyway. I mean, sure I could try and sell it, but that's only ever worked for me once, and kudos/comments/hits are pretty much as good (not financially, of course, but that's what my job's for). I have about 15 original fics up on AO3, and nobody seems to mind so far. Of course, I also have a couple of hundred fanfics up, so possibly the original stuff just gets lost in the noise.

I have one with 57 kudos, and two with 47/48 kudos, one of which has 11 bookmarks. Most of the others are between 10 and 30 kudos. A lot of that could be spillover from the fact that I have a very active fanfic account, so people maybe just browse past them in the midst of the fandom stuff and try them out? I'm not sure how reflective it is of the actual quality.

I don't actually know. I suspect a lot of it is spillover, though. A quick scan of the Original Work section on AO3 gives a lot of low hit/kudo counts, except for longer works or what look like particularly tropey works, but maybe that's only the first couple of pages ie more recent stuff. A lot of the kudos on my original stuff come from names I recognise from my fandom stuff, so I suspect it is often from the audience I built up via fanfic.

I could be wrong, though. I'm primarily a fanfic writer who dabbles in original sometimes, so I'm not the best person to ask.

I've read quite a few original fics on AO3. There are more and more of them there. Sometimes writers put up the first few chapters of their tropey original novel, with a link to their blog if you want to buy it. As a reader, I like that. Free samples.

I found them through tags. I love tags on AO3. That's why I mentioned the fics were tropey. If you're searching through a certain tag, both original and fanfics come up together.

As a reader, I have good experience with original fics on AO3. They're usually of a reasonable quality. I think because it takes a more confident writer to attempt them.

I'd go for the click in this order
- rare fandom I can't ever get enough fics for
- large fandom I know and like
- other fandoms I don't know but read fic in anyway
- original fics
- fandom I know but don't like but might have good fics
- fandom I like but I haven't had good experience with fics in so far
- fandom I've never heard of
- fandom I despise
