OTOH, if I was reading aloud, you'd probably think I was illiterate until I was in something like 4th grade, since there were a lot of words I'd only encountered in print

I had the same problem! It got a lot better after about Grade 7, but I still run into it to this day. Every now and then there's a word that I'm perfectly familiar with, but have just never heard pronounced for whatever reason.
