Yeah, even people who seem really open and friendly in their online posts can be really shy and don't handle socializing with strangers as well as you might expect. They may have some friends that they already know and interact with a lot and that gives the impression that these people are really outgoing when they are not. I also used to notice on LJ that some BNFs would get followers who continued to comment on the BNF's posts without seeming to ever get any acknowledgement from the BNF, so they aren't really friends with the BNF, just people talking amongst tgemselves.
