I started reading "between three and four" according to my mother, and by the time I got to kindergarten at age 5 I was already reading fluently. This created problems, because I would get bored when the class was learning "what sound does this letter make?" and try to wander off and play. The kindergarten teacher just thought I was a troublemaker, and didn't believe my mother initially when she told her I could read. The teacher thought I had just memorized the books we had at home (which was hilarious, since I practically lived at the library, so that would've been a lot of memorization), so my mother made her give me a book I'd never seen before, and I read it. Then I magically transformed from "problem child" into "star pupil" and got to sit by myself with the student-teacher and "write stories" while the other kids were learning the basics. The sad part is that this kindergarten teacher was in the process of getting her PhD in gifted education.
