I was four, and apparently it wasn't a book. It was the comic section of the newspaper. :)

I'm old enough that we had "writing" lessons, too. My script is neat (what they consider to be "copperplate"), but I was constantly being taken to task for not writing on a slant. So I had to actually turn my paper to get things to slant like they were "supposed to".

I actually wrote my notes and manuscripts in cursive until a car accident took out my right elbow. Now I can type much faster, since that doesn't require as much arm movement as writing.
