They had a huge board of wooden letters like this and my mom taught them to me with the phonic method (aka learning them as 'aah', 'buh', 'kuh' instead of 'ay', 'bee', 'see'). Then she'd be like "okay, point to 'phhh'" or "put 'sssss' back in," and I'd put in the appropriate letter.

Apparently it was pretty easy to move onto words after that, because instead of looking at 'cat' and having to go through see-ay-tee first and essentially memorize the spelling, I could just go kuh-aah-tuh. Cat. And so same thing, my mom would combine letters to make words and I'd point to the right ones.

EDIT: I should say though, that this utterly wrecked me for spelling bees for the rest of my life. Even now I have problems spelling out names and stuff out loud for people. I'll stumble and have to correct myself a lot, especially if a word has a sound that can be shared by another letter. 'E's and 'I's are my nemesis.

Ah that's neat! My mom did something similar with crayons. Apparently I didn't talk much at this point, but my mom was just sorting through the crayons and saying their names and when she said "Periwinkle" I was like "Which one's periwinkle?!" and then I was obsessed with periwinkle.
