I think I can agree. Doing this reminds me what I would do when I was young: I have a villain or monster that scared me and make them turn good so I would not have to be scared.

On the other hand, there are many anti-heroes and people unrepentantly terrible that are followed in fiction now, so maybe this is not so much a denial of villainy and more a reaction against the fact that there are so many villains these days.
