I'm trying to hold judgement until I actually see the movie.

To me Maleficent was always the villain who didn't need a reason she just made people's lives hell because she felt like it. I mean didn't she call up the powers of hell? I don't think you can get to a grey area with that.

In some ways, her mysterious motivations give her the most potential to make a awesome story with. Or the most potential to screw up. And Sleeping Beauty was one of my faves so I'm going to find it hard to improve upon.

Exactly this. I love Maleficent because she was evil simply because she felt like it, no tragic backstory required.

"I'm going to shut you in so you'll suffer for 100 years and then I'll kill you... because I can." :~D

Also, Aurora/Rose always came across as kind of sarky to me, which I really enjoyed. (And the stylised drawing style + Tchaicovsky = love. ♥)
