People are supposed to figure out who they are without using words that describe it?

Probably overlabeling or getting trapped by a label would have been a better way of putting it.

Labels are fine, but getting stuck to them or having no flexibility is not.

There are definitely negatives to the labelling thing. I can agree with that. It just seems like this is another thing where people turn it into a black and white issue where it's either good or bad. Labels are convenient terms that describe a larger concept in a concise way. That's it. They can be used in absurd ways but they can also be very helpful, both in practical terms and in psychological terms.

There's on particular label I use that some people would laugh at: homoromantic. It's not something I go around telling everyone because it's just not relevant very often. But it's comforting to know that there's a word for it and that this disconnect I feel between who I'm physically attracted to (everyone) and who I feel some sort of romantic attraction to (women) is an observed phenomenon. Some people look pretty silly when they start announcing these things to the world (and maybe I do too right now) but I can empathize with the basic impulse to associate with these words.

To me, someone being homoromantic makes perfect sense. But throwing around a term like homoromantic to make yourself look more interesting (weather it's true or not) or valid in Certain SJW-Crazed Corners of fandom, and announcing it without context or reason to perfect strangers (like people do in their Tumblr headers) is just kind of ridiculous.

Don't worry, though, that's not what you're doing here.

And that's okay. Which probably didn't come across in my last comment. Sorry. I just wish the people who like labels and the people who don't like them could agree to stop trying to tell the other side they're wrong. There are perfectly valid reasons for both positions.

You're supposed to figure out who you and and use words to describe it. You're not supposed to decide who you are by picking and choosing from a finite set of labels and then be limited by those labels if you don't fit them as well as other folks.
