To be fair, I don't think OP is talking about the types of stories where the writer explores a different side to Villain, but rather the stories that just make it turn out that Villain was really the good guy the whole time and the heroes were really terrible terrible people for fighting against them and it turns out Villain either had a really good reason to do terrible things or really never did them! It's just lazy.
