I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but...

...I know a lot of people are watching this purely for things like special effects, cinematography, etc. - apparently, it's promised to be very good, even if the story itself sucks (which it might promise to be). A lot of the movie buffs I know are pretty insistent that the movie is basically acting as a 'carrier' for showing off said special effects/cinematography/etc. (just their speculation, though).

And from the trailers, they don't look like they're trying to make Maleficent sympathetic.

I'm pretty much going in treating this the same as Snow White and the Huntsman - terrible writing/story, but fantastic special effects and cinematography, meaning it evens out to a good movie overall. Or at least good enough that I don't feel like I wasted money just to see it. Maybe approaching it from that angle will help?
