The original illustrator, W. W. Denslow, had her with two brunette ponytails/braids. Starting with the third book (the second Dorothy book, Ozma of Oz, whence Dorothy returns to Oz and the surrounding lands), the new illustrator, John R. Neill, depicted her with the blonde bob. A VAST improvement, I adored Neill's illustrations even as a little kid, they are marvelously detailed.
