I just had a pretty nice discussion on my journal about the very same topic, and man, have you hit the nail on the head. To repeat, I mean, okay, I can understand something like that happening to him, what with all the kinds of weird cases he gets, but... urgh. Why does it have to happen to him? This is the first time I'm rooting so strongly for the good guy XD

And another friend mentioned:

It makes no sense what they did to him, but that doesn't make up for just how wrong it is that none of his friends were around for him, either? If Edgeworth hopped on a private jet because Larry told him PW fell into a ravine (bless him), I think he would fight for Phoenix's place as a defense attorney or at least make it easier for him to live his life. I can't imagine Edgey just letting him go bankrupt.

Or Larry, for that matter.

So, that's precisely my point in this entire matter. How could they take away the very people who would leap at any given chance to help this guy, with how much he's done for him? It doesn't make any sense and it's the ONLY issue I have with the Odoroki arc. The characters? Apollo, Trucy, they're SO cute and wonderful. Kyouya/Klavier is a sweetheart and Kristoph, while I'm loathing on him, is also a good addition.

But I guess personally, I'll never be able to accept this entirely as Phoenix's end. Shit happens, sure. But still. Sure it's canon now, but still...

However, I wouldn't say his spirit is broken? He seems VERY strong, even then, and I love that he moves on with his life regardless. And well, he gets the cutest daughter ever, that's not really too bad :3 Long ramble about fictional character is long. :D;

And yeah, I guess his spirit isn't broken. It's like Godot said in PW3 - Phoenix gets hurt, but he moves on and is ready for the next step. Only he said it better. with moar coffee.

Hahaha, I've personally more or less disowned the game myself. Apollo, Trucy, and Klavier can come live in our universe but beyond that...

The sad, sick thing is that if this had been a new character, and not supposed to be Phoenix? I would be fascinated and love and pity him and want to know more about him. He'd probably be an easy candidate for favorite or at least top five. It's just having THAT character come from Phoenix Wright that's so thematically wrong.

I know, right? It would have been wonderful to have seen him as a different character. You're absolutely right, though I remember reading in the interviews on court-records.net that the creators were sadistic and wanted fans to feel 'betrayed' (that is to say in reference to how you have to defend a guilty party, like in the end of JfA) but this is SERIOUSLY cruel.

I look at it like an AU. Granted, yeah, no one IN REAL LIFE can ALWAYS have a happy ending, but this isn't real life, is it? ♥ Ah well. Canon is canon, I'll accept it, but not the way they want me to. La la la. XD Phoenix Wright deserves MUCH better than that.

Did they seriously? WELL GG, GUYS, YOU TOTALLY ACHIEVED THAT. IN THE WRONG DAMN WAY.

I figure that when you're writing fiction, you have a certain duty to the theme and milieu of your work. Breaking Phoenix like that? Betrays the character and the work itself. >_< As far as I'm concerned his story ended after 3-5, and now he's just off somewhere doing his thing, being an adorable big brother to Maya and Pearls and going out on sweet and awkward dates with Edgeworth or something. ARUMAJIKI CASE, WHAT ARUMAJIKI CASE? LA LA LA LA.

Not to get into a tizzy or anything, but...Phoenix isn't bankrupt. He works a steady job supporting his daughter (pretty well, too, judging by the amount of crap filling their office). The "hobo" thing is a joke - he's probably making more money doing what he is now than he did as a lawyer working 4 cases a year.

I think people forget (or simply don't know) that what happened to Phoenix took place within a few hours. Edgeworth and Maya didn't abandon him, there simply wasn't time, and we don't get to see them in the aftermath because we don't SEE the direct aftermath. And there is an easter egg to show that Maya hasn't vanished - she and Phoenix are still in touch. But they don't show up because it's not their story any more.

Not that I don't think people should be upset by it, because it is quite a change. But Phoenix is still sarcastic (just out loud instead of in his own mind), and motivated, and clever, and caring, and every bit as much the same Phoenix he always was, to me.

Just...unshaven and in a silly hat. <3

That sort of makes it a lot more better, actually. I just hope the game explains it a lot more! I think my main beef WITH this game is the lack of presence of the characters you grow to love in the first three games, you know?

But man is Phoenix sexy even in that new outfit. But thank you for pointing that out! Geh, should reserve judgment until I play the game instead of relying on summaries.

The game doesn't really explain much concerning Phoenix's old friends... But I've been trying to look at it from the most positive perspective possible: if there wasn't room in the game to explain everything Edgeworth and Maya went through along with Phoenix, I'm satisfied with not seeing them at all and filling in the blanks myself.

That's what all the Japanese fanartists are doing anyway XD;;; (so much hot fanart of Glasses!Edgeworth <33). What Phoenix does with his friends when Apollo isn't around is fandom's territory now. And I for one intend to take full advantage of it! :3

That's a really good attitude to have about it! And sure, I mean, aren't we all filling in the blanks in some way or the other? (I wanted a monocle!Edgey xD) and at this point, I wouldn't trust Capcom with Edgey and Maya at all to be honest, but oh well. Fandom's there for a reason!

And and and, if you're doing more with that area, then please point me to good fanart/fanfic? ♥ I'd love to see some nice stories for Phoenix and his friends set in the future. :D

I haven't seen much in the way of fanfiction for GS4 yet, unless there's something over on the kink meme (I've done a few, but most of them are with Apollo's cast). But Kinoko Kaihatsu (http://www.geocities.jp/kinoko_kaihatsu/) has some great GS4 art with Phoenix and his old friends, too. Hobohodo and Glasses!Edgeworth are so cute together <3.
