I don't think it's a stupid thing to want -- god knows I would have clung to anything to get me through gym class -- but I think you may have to write it yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I would totally read this, but I think for a lot of people this sort of AU would take tons of research and still not feel organic. Unless you actually did crew.

Your school has a requirement to be on a sports team?! That's incredibly time-consuming and stressful even if you love sports. I loathe them and would have had a nervous fucking breakdown.

Yes, I know nobody cares, but I just get really anxious by proxy when I hear about things that would be a nightmare for me happening to other people, and when I feel something I have to say it. Ignore if you like.

OP:

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. You can do an independent study where you go to an outside structured activity for at least a certain amount of times each week, but that would require me to have a car I could drive and probably isn't even possible for some people :/

But yeah. It's kind of fucking awful.

Fortunately a majority of the colleges I'm considering (that have a sports requirement) also happen to have stuff like yoga and beginner's equestrian classes to fulfill the requirement

I've never heard of any college having a sports requirement other than like one or two semesters of what ultimately amounts to "gym class for college kids"

I'd be so pissed :/

On the other hand, college credit for badminton was awesome.

The college my parents went to had the "sampler" class, which took half a semester and included a mandatory swimming test, and then four more phys-ed classes (half a semester each, so two and a half semesters). My mother played on the softball team and took bowling and volleyball. Dad took beginning ice-skating and racquetball. All phys-ed classes were pass/fail, and you passed by showing up to every class in appropriate clothing and participating in the class. (It was a dedicated engineering school, so they weren't exactly trying to push sports.)

I only had to take a total of one semester of gym in college. It generally feels like a waste; it's not like that one semester is going to make a huge difference in my overall lifestyle.

The school I'm on placement at (as a student teacher) also has a compulsory sports team requirement, requiring students to attend at least one practice during the week and also play on Saturdays. This is in addition to regular PE classes.

I'm glad my school didn't do this.

I did crew for 2 years...there's a lot of running. Whut.

Other than that. Crew is so unloved, I dpn't see you ever finding fic, Secret-Maker. D:

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd change schools with that bullshit policy. Do they also have required arts? bet not

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually they do. You have to have so many credits from art electives.
Fortunately that isn't too hard for me

That's...a rather strange requirement. I'm sorry that you've got to deal with that, OP.

That said, I don't think your desire is stupid at all. It makes sense, actually. Despite not liking crew, it's something that you know quite a bit about and to which you could easily relate.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've read exactly 1 fic that was about rowing/crew. It's actually quite well-written and fairly obvious that the author was familiar with the sport. It's a Merlin fic (Merthur) - not sure if that's your cup of tea?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking of this, too. It's a pretty great fic. You should link it (I don't have a link to share it or I would).

I just saw a SPN/RPF fic about crew. I didn't read it so i don't know how 'real' the crew bits are, but it's out there. What's your fandom?

http://stripysockette.livejournal.com/34633.html

(That's the SPN fic, in case you wanted to take a look.)

The Social Network fandom might have fics that deal with crew

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Since it's canon for some of the characters. Or you could try searching tags at AO3.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
That seems like a very natural thing to want. When we painted our house last summer I wanted house painting fic for all of my fandoms.

Well, there are jillions of AUs about every concievable setting, so why the hell not? It sounds more interesting than a coffee shop AU! XD But, I doubt this particular one would occur to people, so you may have to write it yourself.

....Before reading this thread I had no idea that a compulsory sports requirement was odd, OP. I was in your boat too but I love sports.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
not OP but it sounds like they have to be on a team if not independent study from their reply above. I think having just a general sports requirement wouldn't be unusual (but if it is, TIL...), but being on a team would be. Then again, I went to a school which required (past the first year of general PE) that you log exercise for a set number of hours per week, and I could see a school with a similar system getting tired of joke answers or obvious lying and incorporating that sort of policy.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Also not OP

I know in America they usually just have a class two or three days a week where they play a sport or do some physical activity amongst themselves. It is only some schools there that have a compulsory sports requirement. I was in a regular school there for 3 months on an exchange programme and then went back again the next year to a private school which is where they had the sports requirement.

ARE YOU GOING TO MY SCHOOL?

[personal profile] solarbird 2014-04-23 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine in the sense of "where I went," not "that I own." Seriously, I've never heard of another school that did this.
