IMHO, romance movies -- like any other genre! -- have some amazing titles as well as some crappy ones. It's up to you to pick one that will suit your taste, instead of condemning them all as terrible and damaging.

I've seen a couple that I liked. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," for one. It's just that I get really tired of having people shove movies like "Dear John" at me and insist that this is so great and a perfect love story and I shouldn't judge the characters in any way for the terrible, selfish, stupid, or just plain bad choices they make. And of the romantic movies I've seen, for every MBFGW there have been like 10 DJs. I'm not saying that ALL omance movies are uniformly awful. I'm saying that the genre has some giant flaws that people like to pretend don't exist or are actually good things.

I haven't seen either of those movies, so I can't really say anything about them. But I understand how that attitude could be annoying -- still, I do think it's important to respect that people are different. Maybe someone was in a bad relationship and has a thing for saccharine and unrealistic romances as a result, know what I mean?

That said, I think the genre has changed a lot over the years. The ones I love and consider to be great -- "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison", "A Patch Of Blue", "The African Queen", "Brief Encounter", just to name a few off the top of my head -- are very different from most of the recent stuff. That's not the say they don't exist, though! "Dear Frankie" isn't all that old, for example. (Sorry for basically throwing a bunch of recs at you. I hope I don't come off as conceited; I just wanted you to see that there are some awesome romance movies to be had!)

Well, if your friends are super into Nicholas Sparks-type stuff, tell them you're just not interested.

There aren't a lot of really good post-90s romcoms.

Nicholas Sparks is not Romantic Comedy . . . it's mostly trash.
