Steven is just that type of character that always gets rewarded for his stupid behavior, and I hate those characters. Spongebob/Wander/etc.

I don't agree at all, but I see why you would say that.

I agree, and this coming from someone who really really wants to like the show. I don't get why the Gems bring him a long to gather other gems and go on adventures when Steven can't actually do anything. The Gems are always just protecting him or leaving him on the sidelines. They aren't even really training him or teaching him, even when his powers almost got him killed about two times now because he doesn't know how to control it.

I know it's not an action show, but damn do I want some character development that lasts an episode.

Steven has inherited Crystal Gem powers. It would be irresponsible of the other Gems, to say nothing of disrespectful to the memory of Rose Quarts, for them not to train him.

The fact that they sometimes find him to be a burden is actually one of the smartest things about the show. It's mostly subtext, but I think it's there.

My favorite part of Steven Universe is its depiction of a functional non-traditional family.

I don't think I was very clear, because, I agree with you.

I think the Gems should be taking care and training Steven. I just don't think they do a very good job at it and I think it's a terrible idea for them to bring him along to adventures when he has no way to protect himself and get seriously hurt. They haven't taught him how to safely shapeshift, or how to bring out that shield from his gem from the first episode, or even the basics of a weapon. Any lessons or abilities learned never seem to cross over to the other episodes. And that's part of what I find frustrating about the show (among many things)

Sorry if I'm not explaining myself clearly.

Oh! I see now. Yeah, I get that. As much as I love SU, I think I'd like it even more if it felt like I could expect meaningful forward progress on Steven's part.

I mean, the thing is that this is still the very beginning of the show and they're more introducing us to the world and its elements right now rather than actually... being about Steven's growth or anything yet.

I don't disagree with you but I also don't really mind that right now things are just overview. idk idk

Gems have to do something, Steven whines until he gets to go, Pearl tells him not to do the thing, he does the thing, other gems pat him on the head for doing the thing, Pearl has to admit she was 'wrong'. Rinse/repeat. I just could not stomach it after a while.
