Well, no, it's probably not 'science!', but it's also not entirely unheard of, either. There's a lot of talk about it on the interwebs.

And there's an entire book dedicated to the premise that liberalism is a mental illness, but that doesn't mean that we should take it seriously (because it's obviously ridiculous).

Even as a joke I just don't find it funny. It's so, you know, "My team good, your team bad."

*shrug*

A lot of Republican and 'conservative' ideas *are* bad. A lot of people who say they're 'conservative' or 'Republican' have some of the most repulsive and off-putting ideas and convictions i've ever heard.

If you can simultaneously say that every 'baby' is precious and sacred and should never be aborted *and* poor kids don't deserve free school lunches, i'd say there's *something* wrong in your brain, though what, exactly, i wouldn't know.

I have no problem telling people who think it's awesome to starve kids and seniors and the mentally ill by cutting billions from SNAP, while pouring billions into unnecessary defense spending that their team is 'bad' - it is.

Dude, stop.

Mentally healthy people are perfectly capable of thinking/believeing in fucked up things. This whole "you'd have to be LITERALLY INSANE to think that, lol!" shtick both trivializes and demonizes mental disorders. Not cool.

And, like *i* said - it's been bandied about that their *is* something wrong with the GOP/Con mind. I'm not saying 'yes, these people are mentally ill', i'm saying 'there is something wrong going on in the thought process'.

Others *have* posited mental illness - i posted a couple links, but there's more - and there *are* mappable/seeable differences in the brains of people who have a strong 'conservative' mindset as opposed to a more 'liberal' one. It's all theory and hypothesis and not concrete science at the moment, but - as i was doing with my very first comment - it's not a totally unheard of idea out in the real world.

>I'm not saying 'yes, those people are mentally ill'

You sure seemed to be saying it a moment ago. What changed?

>I posted a couple links

Your links are shit. I'm sorry, but they are really, really shit. Probably the worst "evidence" you could have provided. The first one is clearly a joke- and it doesn't even work AS a joke. It's disrespectful and fundamentally misunderstands the subject, and the "logic" is so wrong that the entire article is nearly gibberish. The second one doesn't cite anything that I can see, it doesn't take an especially scientific tone, and it has a silly picture and fake poll to accompany it, all of which is clearly meant to mock and ridicule rather than inform.

That you would refer to such flimsy evidence to support an idea that unfairly tars everyone you disagree with with mental illness, to say nothing of tarring mental illness with Republican ideals, distresses me. We've had some great conversations on occasion, and you've always struck me as really intelligent and kind, but the lines of reasoning you've presented are anything but.

*sigh*

Someone upthread said something along the lines of 'I think conservatism should be/is a mental illness'.

All the comments after reacted as if this person was tossing that out there like a little pebble in a sea.

I provided the links to show that, no, this one person didn't just think that up, it's been bandied about in actual news sites and what have you that being of the 'conservative' mind set is a mental illness. I posted the links to show that, not to 'prove' that the Repubs/cons are mentally ill.

Do i think they're a bunch of asshats, who have some fundamental thing missing? (Like empathy. Or logic. Or common friggin' sense?) Yes, i do. Do i think they're mentally ill? No.

But it's a part of the blogosphere, if you will, and looking around online and clicking various links takes you from 'tongue in cheek' Psychology Today articles to others that a lot more serious in tone and intent (though serious in actual research/content is debatable).

Sorry if you missed the point of my posts. I don't think mental illness is a joke or trivial, and i'm sorry if this makes you, whoever you are, think that I do, and makes you see me in some kind of bad light. That's too bad. But if you extrapolate from this that I somehow think that mentally ill people or their illnesses are a joke, or stupid, or whatever, that's not only too bad but also incorrect.

I'm not going to be around for a bit, so any reply to this likely won't get seen until later in the day, and there's no guarantee i'll reply, anyway, as I've said all i think needs to be said.

I didn't think the other responders said anything like "You just made this up right now, didn't you!" As far as I could read into it they were all saying simply "No, I think you are wrong." Of course people are going to disagree, this is a thread for secrets and it is a pretty strong opinion. And I especially didn't, and don't, get the importance of it being discussed before this one person on FS said something about it. So what if other people have talked about the same thing? It has nothing to do with whether OP is right or wrong.

So yes, that led me to interpret your comments as supportive of seeing Republicans as mentally ill, especially since I found the links to be in such bad taste. I am glad to hear that is wrong, it really does make me feel better.
