I don't think a prof asking students to discuss ideas generally has anything to do with stroking a prof's ego. I know it doesn't for me when I expect my students to be able to respond orally to what they've read. Many times, it's explicitly stated in the student learning outcomes for a course that students be able to make oral arguments about ideas in the course, for example.

I think it really varies on the prof. Some profs take it really personally when students aren't participating to their standards.
