re: I wouldn't have heard of this song at all if tumblr blah blah panties in a twist blah SJW wahwah
And let me tell you something, top 40 radio stations play the same damn five songs a day sometimes. And when this song was one of them, it was pretty hard to avoid if you were around people who listened to top 40 radio.
And of course there's a guy who insists on wearing too much Axe body spray ("It's for the ladies!"- actual quote from said guy, after several real ladies told him he reeked and to tone it down), and he LOVES this song, and when there isn't music playing, he'll absently hum a few bars of it. Or bust out with a 'Hey hey hey'. And then he'll laugh to himself and go back to what he was working on, and it will run through *my* head, because for a while that song really was inescapable out in the real world.
And I WISH people walking around out in the real world could be relied upon to react the way some of the people on tumblr do, because it is so damn uncomfortable to sit there wondering if anyone else is hearing the undertones you're hearing, and then thinking maybe all these men *are*, but it doesn't bother them, because they aren't remotely as likely to be pressured or forced into sex they don't want after issuing a soft no, the soft no you've been taught to give because it isn't nice to give a hard one.
Like, if you could avoid that song outside of tumblr when it was at the height of its popularity, without being a shut-in, I'd like to know how, because I'd get bombarded with it and with people who loved it when I left the house, and it made me really uncomfortable.
(I don't feel like the female covers are as skeevy-- I actually really love a different gender-flipped cover with mostly the same lyrics, because it really felt far more playful and consensual in tone, and not like an older creep preying on someone naked, young, and pretty. The video didn't hurt. I'll have to check this one out because I love most of what Postmodern Jukebox does, but I don't know how I'll feel about it specifically)

Oh, God. I agree with you one hundred percent.
(Also, of course Fandom Secrets has a collective grudge against Tumblr for a couple of reasons. I do not share it and in fact find it pathetic, but I understand why it exists.)
