Thought it was closer to the latter, though they might consume whatever media it is through headcanon goggles and not even think about it in terms of adding on to fanon/making fan-stuff out of it. But I always assumed there was awareness that whatever it is, it, strictly speaking, is not canon, and supporting evidence is vague or ambiguous, or there's nothing that explicitly opposes the idea.
