I actually prefer, cartoon wise, the 4th gen anime, the one set in Sinnoh.

It was, in my opinion, the only season where Ash (even if he was still 10 at that point), actually had some good character growth. Not to mention it had my favorite of the girls.

First gen anime? Sucks balls. I tried to watch it again a few years ago. I could not stand the old voice acting and Ash...ugh. and Misty? Useless.

Johto wasn't any better. Hoenn anime was getting there. Isshu, the 5th season anime, went back to Ash being a dumb shit and Iris was useless....like Misty.

I have no idea what the latest is like.
