Most likely companies shift paper distributors often enough hoping to get the best deal. It's a tricky business finding the best for the least money -- a cheap deal sometimes means that the ink will rub off on the readers fingers and bleed through the pages (boy I remember those days). A better-quality paper may be heavier and cost the company more on shipping.

That makes sense. Though of course there are many companies that might then not end up all smelling the same at the same time...
