I feel you, but she is unfortunately a very good [albeit exaggerated] example of a specific kind of emotional abuse. She hit some serious chords with me. Gothel's the closet I've ever come to being 'triggered' by something, though I'll spare you my wah-wah estranged mother sob story.

I think she's an awesome villain, but she just lends to that sort of discussion. Especially when you have to explain [over and over] why she's a villain to someone who has never experienced someone like her.

omph, really? I have a pretty good (definitely not emotionally abusive) relationship with my mother and I could see why being in a relationship like that is awful. What do people say, "she never hit Rapunzel and cared about her safety so obviously she can't be abusive"?

From my experience, yeah. A bit like that. Or that Gothel wasn't really a villain and that she is terribly maligned by the narrative.

Yes, they do. It's happened here, repeatedly. (My mom is awesome, but my dad? I had to pop some serious anti-anxiety meds after watching that movie because some of the dialogue were things my dad actually did say. *shudders*)

I have no problem with people who like her as a villain. She's a very well-done villain. I do, however, have a problem with the people who defend her actions.
