Ooo, I like the way you think! Apparently in Cap 1 Steve and Bucky were supposed to be orphans (maybe it was mentioned in a tie-in book or comic?), but they retconned that in Cap 2. Him being kicked out could work very nicely in pre-film fic.

Yeah I noticed that. I was like, "Why does Steve have a mom if he is an orphan...."

It was a bit offputting (And I actually preferred them being orphans; it brought about plenty of good fic) but all in all I'm okay with it because we got Bucky being sweet and supportive. “I'm with you till the end of the line” was one of my fav scenes.

He was just coming back from his mother's funeral in that scene, so he was an orphan, he just wasn't orphaned as a small child.
